Why Do Icelanders Write?

Iceland has long been a coveted destination for people who enjoy the written word. The country is known for its rich storytelling culture going back to the 12th century when the first sagas were told. Iceland has one of the highest book publishing and book writing rates in the world – in fact, 1 in 10 Icelanders will publish a book at some point in their lives!

Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, was the first non-native English speaking UNESCO City of Literature when it was named in 2011. Among Icelanders, there is a great respect for the written word and those who have writing as an occupation. As a creative and dynamic culture, literature is one dimension that Icelanders can choose to explore their imagination in order to take part in the country’s famous storytelling culture.

The island itself has also been said to be extremely inspirational on its own. From waterfalls to glaciers to the famous northern lights, Iceland’s nature leaves creative souls awe-struck and inspired to create their next work.
