Shop Anew: Aftur. Icelandic for “again,” Aftur cuts up old clothes and uses the scraps to create new, fashionable pieces.
Enjoy a Drink and Some Art: Gallery Bar at Hotel Holt. One of Reykjavik’s first hotels, it’s home to one of the largest private art collections in Iceland.
Family Eats: Nordic House. Features exhibitions and books for children and adults, plus a souvenir shop – all in a beautiful building.
Best Flatkökur (Icelandic bread): Mosfellsbakarí. Try it with butter and smoked lamb.
Hippest Hostel: Kex Hostel. Visitors can order the traditional order harðfiskur and smjör (fish jerky with butter), “which goes down very well with a beer,” according to Siggi Hilmarsson.
“Stay a day or two longer than you think you’ll need to,” Janine advises, “With a geologically heaving landscape of mountains, geysers and waterfalls just outside the city, there’s plenty to explore nearby.”
