The Wall Street Journal Gives Us an Insider’s Guide to Reykjavik

Experience Iceland like a local with these tips from the country’s most distinguished citizens.

The Wall Street Journal asked some of the most notable Icelanders to divulge their favorite places to eat, drink, shop and explore.  Featured Icelanders are Steinunn Sigurdardottir, award-winning designer; Siggi Hilmarsson, creator of Siggi’s Icelandic-style yogurt; Hrefna Rosa Johannsdottir Saetran, chef and owner of two top Reykjavik restaurants; and Olafur Eliasson, Danish-Icelandic artist who designed Iceland’s award-winning Olafur Eliasson, Danish-Icelandic artist who designed Iceland’s award-winning Harpa concert hall. Below are some highlights from their responses. Click here to read the complete article on the Wall Street Journal.

Best Brunch: Coocoo’s Nest. The owners built from scratch using reclaimed wood and fixtures.

Shop Anew: Aftur. Icelandic for “again,” Aftur cuts up old clothes and uses the scraps to create new, fashionable pieces.

Enjoy a Drink and Some Art: Gallery Bar at Hotel Holt. One of Reykjavik’s first hotels, it’s home to one of the largest private art collections in Iceland.

Family Eats: Nordic House. Features exhibitions and books for children and adults, plus a souvenir shop – all in a beautiful building.

Best Flatkökur (Icelandic bread): Mosfellsbakarí. Try it with butter and smoked lamb.

Hippest Hostel: Kex Hostel. Visitors can order the traditional order harðfiskur and smjör (fish jerky with butter), “which goes down very well with a beer,” according to Siggi Hilmarsson.

“Stay a day or two longer than you think you’ll need to,” Janine advises, “With a geologically heaving landscape of mountains, geysers and waterfalls just outside the city, there’s plenty to explore nearby.”
