New Yorkers no longer need to fly over to Iceland for Icelandic cuisine – simply hop in a cab to SKAL, a new Icelandic restaurant on the Lower East Side.
According to founder Oli Bjorn Stephensen, the inspiration and design of the restaurant is “taken from an old Icelandic cottage living room.” With mix-matched china on the walls and Mason jars filled with fresh bouquets, the space is light and airy.
The menu features plenty of seafood and vegetables, including dishes such as Icelandic arctic char cured in lavender and served with Lava beer cream and shaved artichokes, wild scallops with green tomatoes and cold cream, and hake with grilled cucumbers, young potatoes and verbena.
The meat is delicious as well, including pan-fried duck wings with a puree of mussels and squid ink and lamb saddle with grilled leeks.
As Zagat put it, “this glorious menu is the reason this place is already buzzing.”
