The short Icelandic film “Hvalfjörður” has been selected to compete for the Golden Palm award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, which occurs from May 15th to May 26th. Directed by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson, “Hvalfjörður,” along with nine other films, was named a Golden Palm contender out of 3,500 entries from 132 different countries.
This film is named after a fjord in Western Iceland, which is a long and narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs that were created by glacial activity.
“Hvalfjörður” features the relationship between two brothers who live on a small farm with their parents and chronicles the dramatic events that forever change the lives of the two.
The main characters are played by acclaimed Icelandic actors Ágúst Örn B. Wigum and Einar Jóhann Valsson. “Hvalfjörður” was written by Guðmundsson, who also produced the film with Anton Már Svansson. Icelandic filmmakers Rúnar Rúnarsson and Darin Mailand-Mercado, along with Jacob Oliver Krarup from Denmark, also serve as co-producers for “Hvalfjörður”.
This is the third time that an Icelandic short film has competed for the Golden Palm award at Cannes. The other two films to have competed for this category include “Smáfuglar,” which was directed by Rúnar Rúnarsson in 2008, and “Ævintýri á okkar tímum,” which was directed by Inga Lísa Middleton in 1993.
