Several Films Set to Shoot in Iceland this Summer!

Since the filming of movies such as Clint Eastwood‘s Flags of our Fathers on the black beaches of Reykjanes, production companies have caught onto Iceland‘s unique landscape and wealth of backdrops to choose from. With an ever-changing landscape often quoted as resembling outer space, producers of movies ranging from martian thrillers to small-town mysteries have integrated Iceland‘s vast landscape into the storyline.

Director Darren Aronofsky of Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream, is set to begin shooting his next movie, Noah‘s Ark, in Iceland this summer. Russell Crowe will play the lead role of Noah in a close adaption of the Biblical story. The film‘s release date is slated for March of 2014, with a long post-production schedule inferring a slew of visual effects.

In addition to Noah‘s Ark, two further studios have announced filming in Iceland this summer. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Hollywood heavyweights Sean Penn and Kristen Wiig, will film a storyline about a daydreaming photographer caught up in an adventure in Reykjavik, Seyðisfjörður, Stykkishólmur, and Höfn. No less impressive, the Joseph Kasinski post-apocolyptic sci-fi movie Oblivion starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman is scheduled to start filming on Iceland‘s highlands in May. Both movies are slated for 2013 release.
