On Saturday, August 23rd, thousands of runners will participate in various road races spanning the capital city of Reykjavik. This year’s marathon marks the 31st running of the race, with participants flocking to Iceland’s southwestern coast from all around the globe. So far, runners from the United States, Canada, Germany Sweden and Norway have all signed up for one of the six different races being offered.
Those not looking to tackle the 26.2 mile trek have the option of running the half marathon, 10k, four-part marathon relay or the 3k fun run. Even kids under eight can join in with the Lazy Town Run. The plethora of race distances cater to all abilities from beginners to world-class athletes.
In addition to a fun-filled day of racing, runners will receive a t-shirt, a finisher medal and free admittance to the geothermal baths and pools in Reykjavik for some much needed rest and relaxation. Race day is accompanied by Reykjavik Culture Night, an all-day celebration featuring art exhibitions, theatre events, and a spectacular fireworks show beginning at 11pm.
Not only is the Marathon a fun celebration of endurance, athleticism and Icelandic culture, but participants also raise money for local charities. In 2013, runners collected donations of 72,549,948 ISK–that’s over $630,000 USD and over $681,000 CAD! Those looking to get involved in this year’s race have until Thursday, August 21 to sign up. More information about entry fees and registration information can be found, here.
