Reykjavik is gearing up to celebrate the city’s 15th annual LGBTQI pride festival, “Reykjavik Pride”, from August 6th through 11th. The celebration began in 1999 with just 1,500 people, and has rapidly become one of the most popular events in the city’s cultural calendar, attracting up to 100,000 guests from around the world in recent years.
This year’s Reykjavik Pride program has expanded to include six full days of celebration, featuring a Pride Parade, Queer History Walk, Rainbow Family Festival, and more. The Pride Entertainers Outdoor Concert has been a guest favorite in years past, blossoming into Reykjavik’s largest outdoor event and attracting crowds of more than 90,000. Other featured activities include a Queer Cruise, a panel and seminar from Friends of Hallongrottan, Rainbow Church Services, and the Reykjavik Pride Dance. The festival also offers a number of performances and art exhibits with themes relating to Iceland’s LGBTQI community and gay rights campaign.
Given the international background of the crowd, many Reykjavik Pride events are designed to accommodate non-Icelandic-speaking spectators and participants. Click here to view the full program of events.
