Reality Mirrors Fantasy as “Game of Thrones” Films on Location in Iceland

Enduring the frosty temperatures of the Icelandic climate is a small price to pay for the popular HBO drama “Game of Thrones,” which continues to film on the naturally beautiful landscapes and scenery of Iceland for season three.

One reason that the show wanted to film on location in Iceland is for authenticity purposes. Co-creator of the show David Benioff said that he prefers the natural views of Iceland compared to a greenscreen.

“It just makes such a huge difference coming to a place where it’s actually this cold, and it’s actually snowing,” Benioff said. “[But] at the end of the day, we’d rather spend the money on the locations rather than on the effects. It just makes everything more real.”

Actor Kit Harington, who portrays character Jon Snow in “Game of Thrones,” agrees with Benioff.

“It’s harsh weather conditions,” Harington said. “But the country’s so beautiful that it makes it such a pleasure to come here.”

Season three premieres on HBO on March 31. If you want to get a little taste of the upcoming season before the premiere, take a peek at this behind-the-scenes video of the cast filming in Iceland!
