Puffins are Returning to Borgarfjörður eystri in East Iceland

On April 8 each year, puffins arrive in the Hafnarhólmi nesting ground.

This April, Iceland’s puffins are returning to their nesting grounds in Borgarfjörður eystri in East Iceland! Legend says that each year, puffins arrive at Borgarfjörður eystri on April 8 at 3pm sharp! The area’s residents claim they can set their watch to this fixed date and time each year and welcome the puffins as they arrive in the Hafnarhólmi nesting ground. Borgarfjörður eystri has the most accessible puffin watching grounds in all of Iceland.

Around 10,000 puffins nest every year in Borgarfjörður eystri, making it the most common bird to see while visiting the rural town. Tune into this live stream of the Hafnarhólmi Bay where the puffins can be found nesting from early-April through mid-August:
