Tales of sea monsters have played a significant role in Icelandic folk culture for centuries. There are even several written accounts from first-hand witnesses of these animals being found all around the country! Iceland recently opened the Icelandic Sea Monster Museum to pay tribute to these elusive creatures in Iceland’s Westfjords. From May 15 to September 15, visit the museum to learn the history of sea monster tales and see what these creatures look like for yourself!

The museum is in the village of Bildudalur on the shores of Arnarfjörður fjord, which is said to be one of the most prolific centers of the monster activity in the country. The museum brings sea monsters to life for visitors through a lively mix of wording, images and videos. Displays include an interactive and spectacular action-packed multimedia piece that is the first-of-its-kind in Iceland.

The museum highlights these eye-witness accounts of Iceland’s most famous underwater creatures alongside pieces from academic theories on the nature of sea monsters. There are a variety of relics and artifacts relating to these mysterious animals that appear throughout the museum as tangible evidence that they might truly exist.
