Earlier this year, NASA predicted that December 2013 would be the best month to see the northern lights in over a decade. A “solar flip,” or a complete field reversal of the sun’s polar magnetic fields occurred, occurred this month, creating the best viewing conditions for the lights.
One photographer, David Martin Castan of Spain, captured the incredible display in a series of photographs he took between the hours of 12 and 4 a.m. The striking green lights illuminate waterfalls, mountains and lakes below.
