Mashable recently featured Icelander Hafthor Bjornsson, who was casted to play Gregor Clegane a.k.a. “the Mountain”, in the fourth season of the popular HBO show Game of Thrones. Bjornsson stands at a massive 6’9” tall and weighs more than 400 pounds. It’s no wonder he placed second in the 2014 World’s Strongest Man competition.
According to Mashable, Bjornsson is the third person to be casted as Clegane, a character that who is expected to play a bigger role than ever this season. Although “the Mountain” is a notoriously violent and fearsome character, a quick look at his Reddit AMA thread proves Bjornsson is a family guy who enjoys spending quality time with his daughter and loved ones when he isn’t acting or competing.
Despite the tiny size of Iceland, a country of only 320,000 people, it is inhabited by famously huge people. The World’s Strongest Man competition features a competitive range of Icelanders each year. Earlier this year, Vice traveled to Iceland to find more about why the country produces so many strongmen. Vice’s documentary, “The Giants of Iceland”, features Bjornsson along with other Icelanders who continually rank as among the world’s toughest.
Be on the lookout for more of Bjornsson this season of Game of Thrones! He won’t be hard to miss.
