Landsvirkjun Commits to Being Carbon Neutral by 2025!

Landsvirkjun shifts to renewable energy production in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint.

Iceland’s largest energy provider, Landsvirkjun, released its latest action plan to become carbon neutral by 2025! The initial plan, approved in 2015, declared the company would be carbon neutral by 2030, but the update predicts it is able to achieve this 5 years earlier! The improved action plan involves preventing future emissions, reducing current emissions, and executing several countermeasures that will help to increase carbon sequestration.

The National Power Company of Iceland plans to clean emissions from Krafla Geothermal Power Station by updating vehicles and machinery to utilize renewable fuel sources and reduce air travel emissions by 30%. The company predicts this will reduce emissions by 22K tons of CO2. Additionally, to enable greater long term carbon storage, Landsvirkjun intends to increase reforestation, revegetation, and wetland reclamation. As a result, carbon sequestration figures are forecasted to increase from 30,000+ tons of CO2 in 2018, to 45,000 tons in 2025, and 60,000 tons in 2030.

Hörður Arnarson, Chief Executive Officer of Landsvirkjun says, “Renewable energy production is definitely part of the solution and Landsvirkjun therefore plays a major role. All companies, including Landsvirkjun, should strive to minimize their carbon footprint. Our goal of becoming carbon neutral in 2025 is ambitious, but we know what we need to do and we will achieve it.”

For more than a decade, Landsvirkjun has been working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon sequestration. Throughout this time, Landsvirkjun has collected complete data on its carbon footprint and shared this in the company’s annual Environmental Report. With 18 power stations that mainly run on hydroelectric power, geothermal energy and wind, the company continues to find ways to reduce its carbon footprint. As one of the ten largest producers of renewable energy in Europe, Landsvirkjun is paving the way for a future of sustainable practices!
