“Land Ho!” Coming to Theaters July 11

The charming independent film was filmed in Iceland.

There is no better excuse for an impromptu trip to Iceland than a broken heart. On July 11, the independent film “Land Ho!” premieres in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, followed by openings nationwide. The film follows the story of aging friends Colin and Mitch as they embark on a journey of a lifetime after Colin’s split with his second wife. If the company of old friends isn’t uplifting enough, the vibrant city of Reykjavik and the stunning countryside in Iceland surely inspires the characters and viewers alike.

Filmmaker Martha Stephens chose Iceland as the destination while planning a trip there with fellow filmmaker Aaron Katz. Shot in just 18 days, Stephens and Katz thought it would be fun to actually film Iceland scenes in Iceland, rather than in some other location pretending it’s Iceland, as some big-budget films do.

The LA Times said of Land Ho, “The film functions both as a travelogue of some of the spectacular natural sights on Iceland, which Stephens called “an amazing otherworldly place,” but also as an unexpected buddy comedy and story of men of a certain age coming to terms with where they are in their lives.” Land Ho was shown at Sundance this year, where Sony Classics acquired worldwide rights to the film. Having received favorable reviews, the movie is highly anticipated among many.

Colin and Mitch find themselves reflecting on their lifetime disappointments, resentments and the inevitable sense of morality on their misadventure through Iceland’s iconic sights and scenery. A perfect combination of travel quirks and moral exploration, this charming comedy is one not to miss this summer!
