L.A. Screening of Iceland’s Oscar Nomination

European Film Promotion will host screenings of 22 films submitted in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 87th Academy Awards from October 29 through November 10 at the Wilshire Screening Room in Beverly Hills. Included among the screenings will be Iceland’s 2015 Oscar nomination, Life in a Fishbowl, directed by Baldvin Zophoniasson. The screenings are open to Academy members, international buyers, selected press and LA-based industry.

Described by Variety as a “strongly acted, sensitively directed drama,” the film follows the lives of a  hardworking single mother, preschool teacher and call girl, Eik; an alcoholic novelist and poet, Mori; and an athlete-turned-international banker, Solvi on the eve of Iceland’s 2008 financial crisis. Variety adds that “While these characters might have been mere stereotypes in other hands, Zophoniasson and co-writer Birgir Steinarsson give them nuance and depth.”

Throughout the film, we slowly find out more about eachindividual’s troubled past as their lives become increasingly intertwined. Life in a Fishbowl had its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and received good reviews and an all-around positive reception from the public both at the festival and in cinemas in Iceland, according to Cinema Scandinavia.

In addition to directing, Baldvin Zophoniasson also writes the film’s screenplay along with Birgir Örn Steinarsson. The film is produced by Júlíus Kemp and Ingvar Thordarson of The Icelandic Film Company.
