Tourism in Iceland has been booming over the past few years as interest in the country has grown and more visitors than ever are booking their trips to the Nordic nation. Just last year, Keflavik International Airport announced its six millionth passenger to fly through its gates, but now it has a new record to celebrate.
Keflavik recently broke its passenger volume record with more than one million visitors passing through the airport during the month of July. This record marks a 22.21% increase since July 2016, and is a first in Icelandic aviation history.
This new record includes all passengers who pass through the airport, whether they are leaving or arriving in Iceland or catching a connecting flight. Iceland is the closest European country to the U.S. and Canada with less than five hours flying time from the East Coast, so it’s no surprise that tourists are now choosing Iceland as their next travel destination.
Iceland’s airport is applauded for its welcoming ambiance, tidy restrooms and play areas, tasteful art displays and more. In fact, the airport was named the 2015 Best Airport in Europe.
