Katla Geopark Makes Exclusive UNESCO List

Hot on the heels of UNESCO recognizing Reykjavik as a “City of Literature,” the UN’s cultural office adds the Katla Geopark in south Iceland to a list 87 geoparks. The region is home to the Katla Volcano, Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, natural wonders that have shaped the landscape and influenced human habitation. The list is intended to foster relationships between the geoparks to preserve geologic history as well as promote geotourism.

Katla Geopark is one of nine recent additions to UNESCOs list. See the other geoparks here.
