What better way is there to experience a country than to see its culture in full swing? Since the festival’s start in 1996, Reykjavik Culture Night has become an essential part of cultural life in Iceland. With activities ranging from guided tours, traditional shows, and exhibitions, it can be hard to choose which events to attend. Here are a few ideas in order to help you plan your Culture Night.
Start Culture Night a little early by participating in the 29th annual Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon on August 18. Whether you are a runner or like to cheer from the sidelines, this is a positive way to start experiencing the culture of Iceland. If a marathon sounds daunting, other races include a half marathon, relay race, 10k, 3k fun run, and a children’s run. Another way to get up and move on race day is to take a guided walking tour of the city’s center instead. These tours are great to learn a little more about the history of Reykjavik and provide wonderful photo opportunities! Click here to read the FAQ about the race day events.
Reykjavik Culture Night is one of the most popular events in Iceland and is the city‘s greatest celebration. This is truly an art festival with all kinds of happenings all over town, be it theater, music, fine arts, food or just fun. The day and night-long program of cultural events includes a variety of art exhibitions, string quartets and theater events. Check out the live music, graffiti artists and an air display leading up to the fireworks at 11pm. The spectacular fireworks display officially closes the Culture Night celebrations, but thousands of people make their way to the bars and nightclubs and keep the festivities going.
Reykjavik Culture Night will be held Saturday, August 18 – 19, 2012. For more information, click here.
