Iceland’s Progressive Party recently announced that Sigrun Magnusdottir has been chosen to replace the outgoing Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson as the country’s Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources.
Although many thought Vigdis Hauksdottir would be appointed to this position, the prime minister revealed that Hauksdottir recommended Magnusdottir because of her Reykjavik roots. Magnusdottir did mention that she was surprised by the appointment, but also very happy.
At 70 years old, Magnusdottir is Iceland’s oldest serving MP. The new MP of Environment noted that she aims to resolve climate issues, ensure the land and ocean are well treated and added that there are important projects all around, according to Ice News.
Sigrún Magnúsdóttir has a BA in Folklore and Urban Studies from the University of Iceland (2006). From 1962 – 1971 she worked in banking before becoming a trader in 1971. She went on to serve on the Reykjavík City Council for 16 years, including as chairman of the city council for 6 years and has served on the boards of several companies. Sigrún Magnúsdóttir was elected as Member of Parliament to the Reykjavík North constituency in 2013 and is married to former Social Affairs Minister Páll Pétursson, according to Trade Bridge Consultants.
