Iceland’s natural geothermal activity makes it an ideal location for geothermal power plants. More than 100,000 tourists visit Iceland’s hydro and geothermal power plants every year, making them some of the most popular attractions in the country. The most popular power plant, Hellisheidarvirkjun, is a geothermal power plant that provides electricity, geothermal water for heating and cold water for consumption to 67 percent of the Icelandic population. The power plant’s visitor’s center is open everyday from 9am to 6pm and offers guided tours through the plant as well as various multi-media presentations.
Hellisheidarvirkjun is part of Iceland’s most popular tourist route, the Golden Circle, which also includes Geysir geothermal area, Thingvellir national park and Gullfoss waterfall. Gustaf Adols Skulason, CEO of Samorka, the federation of the electricity, district heating, waterworks and sewage utilities in Iceland, said the power plants attract more tourists during the summer months although they’re open year-round.
