Each year, the Grammy Awards recognize achievements in the music industry, highlighting successes and bringing the music community together. Earlier this week, nominations for the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards were announced, including four nominations for Icelandic artists! Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is nominated for two Grammy awards, and composer Atli Örvarsson and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra are each nominated for one.
Hildur is nominated for best soundtrack for visual media for her soundtrack to the film Joker. The category encompasses original compositions made for film, television, computer games, and other visual media. She has also received a nomination in the best instrumental arrangement category for her arrangement of the piece “Bathroom Dance”, also from the Joker soundtrack. At last year’s 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, Hildur won the award for best soundtrack for visual media for her soundtrack to the TV series Chernobyl.
Icelandic film score composer Atli Örvarsson is nominated in the best compilation soundtrack for visual media category for his score for the Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. This is Översson’s first Grammy nomination.
The Iceland Symphony Orchestra is nominated in the best orchestral performance category for its album Concurrence. The recording, conducted by Daníel Bjarnason, features new works by four Icelandic composers: Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, Haukur Tómasson, María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, and Páll Ragnar Pálsson. The recording features Sæunn Þorsteinsdóttir and Víkingur Heiðar Ólafsson as soloists.
