This month, Icelandair will be launching its brand-new line of onboard amenity kits, designed to enhance passengers’ travel experiences and leave them feeling rejuvenated when they reach their destinations. Icelandair has always had a respect for nature – even naming its aircraft after local volcanoes and natural phenomena – so the company chose to celebrate Icelandic wildlife with this collection.
The “Dýralíf” amenity kit collection, translating to “Wildlife,” will be entirely eco-friendly. Icelandair has partnered with design company WESSCO International and skincare company Hannes Dóttir to create four unique purse designs, each one drawing inspiration from a different Icelandic animal. No detail was spared in this project: WESSCO International sent a design team to Iceland to study the country’s flora and fauna in order to better understand Icelandair’s vision and values. The qualities of Iceland’s native inhabitants, particularly those of the puffin, arctic fox, Icelandic horse and raven, were observed and showcased through the collection’s design.
Icelandair is constantly working toward becoming as environmentally friendly as possible, and makes an effort to reduce its emissions, decrease the use of plastic on board, and optimize the use of recyclable material. The Dýralíf amenity kit collection was no exception: each purse is made from a combination of sustainable materials such as recycled canvas, vegan leather, and felt made from recycled plastic bottles.
Each kit comes in an animal-inspired purse that can be kept and reused, and contains a variety of eco-friendly amenities: skincare products from Hannes Dóttir, earplugs, a dental kit including toothpaste and a toothbrush made from cornstarch-based biodegradable material, socks made from recycled materials, an eyeshade, stickers for use by passengers if they don’t wish to be disturbed, and fun educational facts about each Icelandic animal! Plastic is minimally used throughout the kits, and all content wrappings are made from paper.
The Puffin and the Arctic Fox are the first two kits to launch: the puffin-inspired pouch will feature a zipper modeled after the bird’s unique beak shape and color, while the Arctic Fox pouch will come in two different color options to honor how the animal’s coat color changes with the seasons. These kits will be available in April 2019.
In 2020, the Icelandic horse and raven step into the spotlight. The Icelandic horse-inspired pouch will feature an arched top resembling the horse’s back and a zipper puller representing its tail, while the raven-inspired pouch will portray the bird’s uniform dark color and power. The creative, unique design of each pouch is a beautiful tribute to Iceland’s native inhabitants, and makes them the perfect accessory, even after the flight has ended.
The complimentary amenity kits will be issued to Saga Premium passengers on all flights between Keflavík and North America, and will also be available for purchase through the online Saga Shop.
