Iceland has taken the #1 spot for the 13th year in a row in the 2020 Global Peace Index! According to the latest Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) analysis, Iceland remains at the top, followed by New Zealand and Portugal in second and third, respectively.
The Institute for Economics & Peace has been compiling the Global Peace Index every year since 2008. To measure peace, the IEP gives points in three categories, based on 23 qualitative and quantitative measures. Countries can receive points for general security, ongoing domestic and international disputes, and militarization. The main conclusion drawn from this year’s report is that global security has decreased slightly between years. Since 2008, the world has become 2.5 percent less peaceful. However this does not represent a uniform decrease – with 81 countries seeing an improvement in overall peacefulness this year. For more information, view the full report here.
