Purple Cow Productions is a music production company based in a part of London that is known as The Northern Heights. It’s an urban mountain up here, which by day means traffic, restricted views and pollution, and by night, that the only lights in the sky are those of the Europe-bound night flights crossing overhead. So we decided to go find some real mountains and stars by going on a creative retreat to the magnetic ‘northern heights’ of Iceland.
We put together a video of our trip and one of our music producers, Kiki Aublette then created an awesome soundtrack to accompany our extraordinary footage. And here’s the resultant music video:
Joined by a talented and intrepid videographer, assorted video cameras and Go Pros, off we went to base ourselves in Reykjavik and from there we went on an adventure with KatlaTrack Adventure Tours and an intrepid guide, its founder Gudjón. What followed was spectacular. We drove to the black sand beaches of the Reynisfjara shore; he also had us hiking on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and climbing to an ice cave; and we visited the haunting Sólheimasandur plane wreck and Skógafoss waterfall.
Whilst there we also took a superjeep trip around the spectacular Golden Circle, which is a 190 mile loop from Reykjavik into the southern uplands of Iceland. This takes in the Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir. Back in Reykjavik we visited the spectacular ‘space rocket’ Hallgrímskirkja church and the new Harpa Concert Hall, and we were very privileged to be given a personal tour of the imaginative arts venue, Mengi by one of its co founders, the musician Skúli Sverrisson. This venue is created and managed by artists and Skúli filled us in on the fabulous cultural calendar that they curate there. We ate local dishes on our trip and one evening, dined in the extraordinary Perlan revolving restaurant that sits on the edge of the city, built on the top of the city’s huge geothermal water storage tanks. As a result it has spectacular views across Reykjavik. And of course, we chased the mystical Northern Lights. Or were they chasing us? We had multiple sightings!
We returned to London, drunk on Iceland’s fresh air and massive scenery, our heads full of ideas and inspiration, and with recordings we’d made too of the natural sounds that we’d heard whilst out in the wilds. We hope you enjoy our video above as much as we loved the country.
