How Icelanders Prepare for Fjarðabyggð Hiking Week!

Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts will experience East Iceland’s mountains during this week-long event.

One of Iceland’s biggest outdoor recreational events, the Fjarðabyggð Hiking Week, is coming up! Taking place June 20-27, the week-long hiking festival features eight days of outside entertainment and activities that are perfect for the whole family. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just want to enjoy the outdoors, experience the beauty and nature of East Iceland’s mountains during this unique event!

The festival’s program includes activities spanning from family walks to challenges for hiking mountaineers – and everything in between. Kids can even participate in an outdoor activities course or nature schools. During the evenings, attendees can enjoy entertainment such as music, dancing and singing. Participants can pay for individual events, or purchase a pass for admission to all events and activities.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to obtain the honorary title, Fjarðabyggð Mountain Hiker, by climbing the five mountain peaks chosen to represent the mountains of Fjarðabyggð during the week. If hikers rise to the challenge and climb all five mountains during the week, they will earn the title. For children 15-years-old and younger, they will earn the title by hiking just three of those mountains.
