The Game of Thrones season 4 premiere is quickly approaching! After filming north of the wall scenes In Iceland for seasons 2 and 3, the Game of Thrones cast and crew returned to the island to film scenes season 4, which premieres on April 6, 2014.
The Game of Thrones production crew posted this video detailing the “intensity of Iceland” during their first trip to northern Iceland in the winter. Though they had to work in freezing weather through constant blizzards, crew members noted Iceland’s “otherworldly” beauty. Executive producer David Benioff said “I don’t think you could recreate this scenery on a green screen or on a backlot – there’s nothing like it.”
This past year, however, the Game of Thrones crew visited Iceland during the warm summer months to film season 4. Everyone was surprised at the incredible change in climate, as can be seen in this A New View of Iceland video posted to the official production website. The video description reads: “Filming in the warm season allowed the production to luxuriate in luscious, green landscapes instead of huddling for warmth as in past years.”
Iceland will be highlighted this season in other ways as well. Icelandic band Sigur Ros will make a cameo on Game of Thrones, although it’s still unclear what role they’ll play. According to Entertainment Weekly, Game of Thrones’ showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are big fans of Sigur Ros and listen to their music while shooting in Iceland.
Icelandic weightlifter Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, winner of the strongest man competition, will play an important role in Game of Thrones season 4 as well. “For all my fans! I am happy to tell you that I will be THE MOUNTAIN in season 4 In Game of Thrones!” Björnsson wrote on his Facebook page in September. He plays the chief of the Clegane tribe from Westerland and is in constant struggle with his older brother Sandor who once scorched his face, visir.is reports.
