Recently, CNN’s Barry Neild made the journey to Iceland to explore the picturesque countryside that was used as the backdrop of Christopher Nolan’s recently released, Interstellar. Internationally, the film surpassed $300 million at the box office has been well-received with audiences and critics alike. Some of the film’s remarkable success is attributed to the incredible scenery, which Nolan relied on Iceland to provide.
While a majority of the film was shot elsewhere, Iceland is featured strongly in posters and trailer scenes showing McConaughey walking across a hostile, wintry terrain. These incredible depictions inspired Neild to travel to Iceland and embark on his own “interstellar” journey.
From traversing across the Svinafellsjokull glacier, to exploring the majestic Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, Neild experiened some of Iceland’s most striking scenery. He notes, that while the 350-person crew booked the entire glacier for production and even built their own roads access the site, “Today there’s no sign they were ever here. Any trace of their presence has long since been swallowed by the advancing ice.” The ice of the Svinafellsjokull glacier is over 200 feet thick in some places, and has been known to swallow up anything its path: “If you drop your iPhone here, you can probably come back and get in 20 years,” says Tomas. “There’s a saying: whatever the ice takes, it always gives back.”
