The Best Sights Along Iceland’s New Arctic Coast Way

The route gives travelers a new way to explore Iceland’s hidden wonders.

On World Ocean Day, a new experience opened in Iceland to help travelers see more of the beautiful country: The Arctic Coast Way. The route is making history as the first official touring route in Iceland and offers travelers a unique way to explore the natural wonders of the country. The Arctic Coast Way includes six peninsulas and runs 900km along black sand beaches, spectacular cliff faces, glacial river deltas and 21 quaint fishing villages from Hvammstangi to Bakkafjörður. While taking you through some of the most remote areas of Northern Iceland, the route gives travelers the chance to encounter volcanic land, Iceland’s famed geothermal baths, and the stunning Northern Lights! Recently named by The Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 destinations to visit in Europe, the Arctic Coast Way is Iceland’s latest must-do activity!

Travel off the beaten path to experience the best of Iceland, including excursions to see the midnight sun, sea rock formations, and local culture up close. Iceland is teeming with spectacular wildlife, and the edge of the Arctic offers a chance for some unforgettable encounters during seal watching tours and horseback riding through the mountains. Follow the narrow, graveled tracks on the shoreline and explore the roads carved steeply into the mountains – you’ll be awestruck by the natural beauty of Iceland along the whole route.

For a breakdown of the route, Conde Nast Traveler’s Ashlea Halpern detailed her own five-day journey along the coastline. Her highlights include encountering a beer spa and seeing Iceland’s incredible waterfalls and geothermal sea baths. Embrace your adventurous spirit as you explore stunning landscapes and discover Iceland in a whole new way.
