What holiday do you associate with fireworks? For most Americans, it’s probably the 4th of July. But for Icelanders, it’s almost certainly New Year’s Eve.
With no restrictions on fireworks, the entire population of Reykjavik – approximately 200,000 people – creates its own fireworks show annually on December 31 to welcome the New Year, producing a massive display. Fireworks are mainly sold by the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) to raise funds for the courageous volunteer association, making Icelanders even more enthusiastic about purchasing fireworks. Check Iceland Naturally’s Facebook page on Monday, July 21 to see if you are a finalist.
If you’re selected as a finalist, you can then encourage your friends to vote for your photo from July 22-28. The person whose photo receives the most votes will receive a trip for two to Iceland to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Reykjavik! The winner will be announced on Monday, July 29.
