Just after the final game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, more than 250 young athletes will travel to Reykjavik from July 23 to 27 to participate in the 12th annual Rey Cup soccer tournament. Described as “football and fun,” this unique event gives young players the opportunity to not only play with athletes from around the world, but also experience everything Iceland’s capital has to offer. This year, 60 teams have signed up to participate in the Rey Cup, with a record 14 teams coming from other countries like England, Scotland, France, Germany, Holland, The U.S.A. and Canada.
When they’re not on the field, participants can enjoy everything downtown Reykjavik has to offer, or travel a few miles down the road to experience some of Iceland’s natural wonders. Visitors can see geysers, volcanoes and glaciers, go whale watching out of Reykjvaik harbor or even go swimming in naturally heated geothermal pools.
During the five-day event, athletes and their coaches take up residence in schools located just a 5 or 10 minute walk from the fields. This reinforces a feeling of community among teammates and across teams. Watch a video of the Rey Cup here!
