In Iceland, New Year’s Eve is honored as a historic and traditional holiday full of laughter, music and magic. Especially during a holiday season impacted by travel restrictions and gathering limitations, it’s important to find ways to spread cheer and celebrate together. This year, Iceland Naturally will take you behind the scenes with the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) to give you a glimpse at the preparations for the year’s biggest fireworks celebration. Then, we’ll stream the fireworks show live from downtown Reykjavík on Iceland Naturally’s Facebook page so you can experience the awe-inspiring lights and take part in the festivities!
The majority of proceeds from fireworks sales in and around Reykjavík go to ICE-SAR, Iceland’s volunteer rescue group. The group is specially trained and equipped to carry out rescue missions in Iceland in extreme situations. Because there are no fireworks restrictions around the holidays in Iceland, thousands of Icelanders are able to support ICE-SAR through fireworks purchases. When the clock strikes midnight, the city lights all their fireworks together, creating a magnificent show unlike any other.
