Each spring, authors and aspiring writers from all around the world come together to participate in the Iceland Writers Retreat. Returning this year from April 11-15 in Reykjavik, the event hosts small group workshops, networking and a unique travel experience that allows writers to focus on their writing while being inspired by the culture around them.
Participants are encouraged to sign up for five workshops that will be led by award-winning international authors. The workshops involve small groups of up to 15 people paired with one author. This intimate setting allows for open discussions and for participants to ask the author questions and better their writing skills. No matter what level or type of writer you are, this retreat is a great opportunity to improve your skills and try new literary opportunities. Workshops this year cover topics including, help with your new novel, editing your pieces, and tips to create new characters. You can find the full workshop list here.
The retreat also offers a chance to see some of Iceland’s most famous landmarks and sights that connect to Icelandic literature and beyond. Participants can choose which three-day tour they would like to embark on, including a tour of the Golden Circle, a Reykjavik walking tour, or a trip to the Blue Lagoon. There is also an option to add on a “Relax and Write” extension that includes free time to explore the area as well as networking events each evening.
Reykjavik is the world’s first non-native English speaking UNESCO City of Literature which makes it a perfect spot for this event. While surrounded by the unique Icelandic culture you will be able to learn about the history and special literary works that have been inspired by the country.
Admission to the event includes workshops, three lunches, a welcome dinner, networking events and even an all-day guided tour in the Icelandic countryside, led by an Icelandic writer!
