Icelandic culture during Christmas time is incredibly rich with tradition, cuisine, and festivities! The perfect way to celebrate the holidays in Iceland is to visit one of their famous Christmas Markets. This season, there are three must-see markets that are sure to get visitors in the Christmas spirit! Take a trip to the famous Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður to start the holiday season off right! This year, experience live music, horse-drawn carriage rides, and even a visit from the Icelandic Yule Lads! And don’t forget to pop into the quaint village of Christmas houses selling all kinds of Icelandic crafts, snacks, and hot drinks. The town center also features jewelleries, cafes, bakeries, and studio galleries with artwork from local Icelandic artists! The village is open from 13:00 – 18:00 during Advent.
Be sure to drop by the Market at Hjartagarður in the heart of downtown Reykjavík for all sorts of Icelandic Christmas goodies. Stroll around this market to the soundtrack of live Christmas music while browsing handmade Icelandic products and foods! The market will be open from the 12th of December until the 15th and again from the 19th through the 23rd.
Finally, adventurous visitors can take a trip to Heiðmörk; the woods on the border of Reykjavík, for the Reykjavík Forestry Society’s Christmas Market! Families can enjoy local food, crafts, and design as well as pick out their own local Christmas tree. The Forestry Society also provides saws and guidance for families that prefer to find their own tree. Additionally, the market has daily writers and musicians who come to read for children around the bonfire and play music in local cafes. And keep your eye out for the iconic Yule Lads who are sure to make an appearance!
