Taste of Iceland takes over Chicago for the second annual cultural festival April 20-23!

Chicago welcomes back Taste of Iceland for the second time April 20-23 to celebrate various aspects of Icelandic culture. Chicagoans will have the opportunity to experience authentic Icelandic cuisine, enjoy Icelandic music at the Reykjavik Calling concert at Chop Shop / 1st Ward, and view and discuss Icelandic film and art during this four day festival. FOOD: Icelandic Menu | April 20-23

Icelandic chef Viktor Örn Andrésson will fly to Chicago to collaborate with American executive chef James Lintelmann at Baptiste & Bottle. Named Iceland Chef of the Year, Viktor is one of Iceland’s most prestigious culinary experts. He recently led the Icelandic National Culinary Team to a bronze medal at this year’s Bocuse d’Or 2017 Finale! The two chefs will prepare a delicious four-course prix fixé menu for the event. Brennivin’s 2015 cocktail champion, Kári Sigurðsson, will also make the flight from Iceland to collaborate with Baptiste & Bottle mixologist, Michael Fawthrop, to create unique cocktails featuring Iceland’s favorite vodka, Reyka Vodka, and aquavit, Brennivin, to pair perfectly with your dinner. COCKTAILS: Icelandic Cocktail Class | April 20

Don’t miss Taste of Iceland’s first cocktail class in Chicago! Led by Brennivin cocktail champion Kári Sigurðsson, and The Gwen’s lead mixologist Jason Deatherage, this unique class will include interactive tutorials on how to make delicious craft cocktails. Reyka Ambassador Trevor Schneider will join Kári and Jason to give class-goers an introduction to Reyka and its distillery process. The recipes will combine traditional Icelandic concoctions with locally crafted spirits. The Reykjavik Calling concert will take over Chop Shop / 1st Ward on April 22 in partnership with CIMMfest. Spend the evening with two of Iceland’s most talented bands Fufanu and Mammut as they play alongside a local act OHMME! (You must be 18+ to enter.)

FILM: Shortfish: Iceland’s Premier Short Film Festival | April 23

The Icelandic film industry’s premier festival, Stockfish, is screening its short film program on April 23 at the The Logan Theater. The short film division of the Stockfish festival, aptly dubbed Shortfish, focuses on highlighting up-and-coming Icelandic filmmakers. The Shortfish screening at Logan Theatre will feature six short films, including Shortfish 2016 winner “Like it’s up to you” from director Brynhildur Þórarinsdóttir. Admission to the screening is free and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will run for approximately 75-minutes with each short running between five and twenty minutes. There are no restrictions on these films, but they are not recommended for children. Please bring your Eventbrite ticket to the theatre. You will be asked to exchange your printed ticket for an official Logan Theatre ticket.

ART: The Icelandic Art Center Presents: Iceland’s Thriving Contemporary Visual Arts Scene | April 22
Join Björg Stefánsdóttir, director of the Icelandic Art Center, for a discussion on Icelandic visual arts. Björg Stefánsdóttir will offer insight into how Iceland (with a population of 340,000) is able to sustain a thriving contemporary art scene. Hear how Icelandic art has spread across the world, through the artist driven community and The Icelandic Art Center. The Icelandic Art Center is the commissioner for the Icelandic Pavilion at the Venice biennale, exhibiting the current scene in Iceland. It´s an extremely important platform for Icelandic artists, to facilitate strong connections to international art professionals. This year, Egill Sæbjörnsson will be presenting Iceland at the Venice Biennale with two trolls in a work that he calls “Out of controll”.

ART: TV Dreams Exhibit at Miishkooki Art Space | April 22

Stop by Miishkooki Art Space to view Icelandic art by Baldur Helgason. TV Dreams is a group exhibition with works by Baldur, Swedish-based artist Peter Jeppson, and local Chicagoan Zach Mory. The exhibit features figurative paintings and drawings with comic and cartoon elements. Join the artists for a closing party on April 22 to celebrate the installations success!
