FOOD: Icelandic Menu at The Merchant | Mar. 17-20

Icelandic chef Siggi Helga from Grillið restaurant will fly to Boston to create a delicious Icelandic dinner menu at The Merchant with the help of American chef, Edwin Morales. One of Iceland’s premier chefs, Siggi currently oversees three restaurants, including Grillið, and recently coached chef Viktor Orn Andresson to a bronze medal at Bocuse d ́Or!  Brennivin’s 2015 cocktail champion, Kári Sigurðsson, will also make the flight from Iceland to join the Merchant’s Bryan Ames in concocting unique cocktails featuring Iceland’s favorite vodka, Reyka Vodka, and aquavit, Brennivin, to pair perfectly with your dinner.

MUSIC: Reykjavik Calling at The Middle East | Mar. 18

Boston is proud to host the Reykjavik Calling concert in collaboration with WERS on March 18 at The Middle East in Cambridge. This Icelandic-American concert will feature Icelandic artists Fufanu, whose new album Sports just dropped on Feb. 3, and Mammút, who won best album of the year and best song of the year at the 2014 Icelandic Music Awards. The Dirty Dottys, Boston’s favorite pop-motown band will share the stage with Mammút and Fufanu. Admission to the free concert is granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so come early! (Must be 18+ to enter.) Not going to be in Boston on March 18? No worries, you can watch the concert from the comfort of your own home! Iceland Naturally will live stream the Reykjavik Calling concert over our Facebook.

The Write Stuff: How Iceland Inspires Lovers of the Written Word | Mar. 16

Celebrate Iceland’s rich storytelling tradition with a discussion led by Iceland’s First Lady Eliza Reid at WBUR. In addition to being first lady, Reid is also a Reykjavik-based writer and editor who co-founded the Iceland Writers Retreat. Iceland is one of the most popular destinations for creative minds, and Reid will focus her talk on what makes Iceland so inspirational for lovers of the written word. Attendees can learn about and discuss novels from highly-acclaimed Icelandic authors, as well as enjoy Icelandic food and drink at WBUR’s Events Room.

Shortfish: Iceland’s Premier Short Film Festival | Mar. 19

The Icelandic film industry’s premier festival, Stockfish, is screening its short film program on March 19 at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square. The short film division of the Stockfish festival, aptly dubbed Shortfish, focuses on highlighting up-and-coming Icelandic filmmakers. The Shortfish screening at the Brattle Theater will feature six short films, including Shortfish 2016 winner “Like it’s up to you” from director Brynhildur Þórarinsdóttir. Admission to the screening is free and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will run for approximately 75-minutes with each short running between five and twenty minutes. There are no restrictions on these films, but they are not recommended for children.

ART: The Icelandic Art Center Presents: Iceland’s Thriving Contemporary Visual Arts Scene | Mar. 17

Join Björg Stefánsdóttir, director of the Icelandic Art Center, for a discussion on Icelandic visual arts. Björg Stefánsdóttir will offer insight into how Iceland (with a population of 340,000) is able to sustain a thriving contemporary art scene. Hear how Icelandic art has spread across the world, through the artist driven community and The Icelandic Art Center. The Icelandic Art Center is the commissioner for the Icelandic Pavilion at the Venice biennale, exhibiting the current scene in Iceland. It´s an extremely important platform for Icelandic artists, to facilitate strong connections to international art professionals. This year, Egill Sæbjörnsson will be presenting Iceland at the Venice Biennale with two trolls in a work that he calls “Out of controll”.
