The brainchild of Canadian singer/songwriter Mark Andrew Hamilton, the indie rock/chamber pop project Woodpigeon (pared down from Woodpigeon Divided by Antelope Equals Squirrel, for the sake of brevity) formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2005 as a trio that mostly stuck to street performing. Upon moving back to his native Calgary, Hamilton shorted the name and began recording his debut under the moniker, the appropriately titled Songbook, followed by Treasury Library Canada (2009), Die Stadt Muzikanten (2010), Thumbtacks and Glue (2013) and T R O U B L E (2016). Woodpigeon has been listed for the Polaris Prize and awarded both the Galaxie Prize and London’s Saatchi Gallery Music Prize.
He’s also the founder of the Icelandic / Canadian exchange project EMBASSYLIGHTS, releasing a full-length self-titled album written in Reykjavik and recorded at the Banff Centre in 2014. On the EMBASSYLIGHTS project he worked with Svavar Pétur Eysteinsson (Prins Polo), Benedikt Hermannsson (Benni Hemm Hemm), poet and author Ragnar Helgi Olafsson, producer Flex Arnason and drummer Kristján Freyr.
