The Reykjavík Arts Festival is a biennial, multidisciplinary festival that presents exhibitions and performances of contemporary and classical works in major cultural venues and unconventional spaces throughout Reykjavík, Iceland. This year, the festival celebrates its 50th anniversary, and preparations have been under way for the past two years. Sadly, the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has made it unsafe for the festival to kick off in June as originally planned – but the Reykjavík Arts Festival wants its attendees and fans to know the show will go on, just at a later date to be determined as conditions become safer.
Devoted to both its audiences and artists, the festival sought to find a way to materialize the programming without compromising patrons’ safety. As such, the Reykjavík Arts Festival made an agreement with all of its artists, partner institutions and venues to launch the full program of the festival. The program is available on the festival’s website, and includes descriptions of the events and exhibitions, full credit lists and venues. The only thing left out in the program is the dates of the events! In due course, when it is judged safe by the authorities and when the artists and audiences are ready to attend events, the festival will release the specific dates and times of the events. Those interested can even sign up for a special mailing list for individual events on the festival’s website to follow along when dates are released.
The theme for this year’s festival is “Worlds.” Worlds collide and worlds open up in the overflowing program. An Australian acrobatic circus company, a durational dance performance for infants, Víkingur Ólafsson’s recital of Debussy and Rameau, new work by composer Anna Thorvalds performed in a planetarium with visuals by Sigurdur Gudjonsson and the amazing durational performance from Lithuania; Sun & Sea (Marina) which won the Golden Lion at the Venice biennale last year, are but a few of the highlights of this years’ edition.
