It’s no secret Iceland’s the place to be for travelers of all kinds – and the world is really starting to take notice. Iceland was named the top destination for 2016 by both Luxury Travel Guide and Budget Travel; Refinery29 and National Geographic also suggested Iceland is a must-see location this year. So what’s all the hubbub about?
Aside from the amazing no-brainers like the spectacular northern lights and Blue Lagoon’s geothermal spa, Iceland’s making it even easier to be a visitor to the Land of Fire and Ice. Hotels are popping up left and right since the country’s overnight stay rate has grown exponentially and 89% of overnight stays are in hotel rooms (rather than other travel accommodations). Hilton’s new Canopy hotel will open in Reykjavik this year, along with a new Marriott Edition hotel scheduled to open in 2018. Looking to book your trip before then? Check out the Puffin Hotel with a great view of the Holmatindur mountains; Hotel Husafell, a design-centric hotel with an adventure lodge attitude; Hotel Lava Grindavík, newly opened and close to Blue Lagoon!; or KEX Hostel, voted Hippest Hostel by the Wall Street Journal.
Airlines are making it easier on North American travelers as well, with more flights than ever landing in Reykjavik. Icelandair continues to grow its list of North American hubs (including Chicago, beginning March 16) offering year-round service in a variety of cities.
More tours and resources are making their debuts as well. Icelandair’s new Stopover Buddy program allows you to trek around Iceland with a native Icelander (and Icelandair emplouee) who shares your interests. Trafalgar is operating their Ultimate Iceland Journey, a 10-day experience that takes visitors to glaciers, lava formations, geysers and more. Also available: eco-friendly tours and trips designed specifically to capture amazing photos.
