What are the Origins of the Blue Lagoon?

Dive into the history of this incredible Icelandic landmark.

In the early 1980’s, local residents of the Blue Lagoon area started bathing in a warm blue reservoir that had formed in a lava field next to Svartsengi Resource Park. While the water was initially expected to seep through the lava and return to the earth, it’s high concentration of silica created a beautiful body of water instead. From there, Blue Lagoon was created, and ever since has served as an enchanting Icelandic landmark.

Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon became the focus of a scientific study in 1992, which in turn led to Blue Lagoon Limited, a company dedicated to the research and development of the water’s primary elements: silica, algae, and minerals. With the research confirming the healing properties of the geothermal seawater, Blue Lagoon Ltd.’s next step was to launch a skincare line! Created from the bioactive elements of Blue Lagoon, the line includes a silica mud mask, lava scrub, and algae mask! Blue Lagoon skin care is the result of 20 years of research and development, and in-vitro and in-vivo studies have proven its anti aging properties.

In 1999, Blue Lagoon opened its modern-day spa facility, and today boasts two hotels, Silica and Retreat, both of which offer a new way to indulge in the geothermal experience. Blue Lagoon has become a popular destination for locals and travelers alike, and was even named one of National Geographic’s 25 Wonders of the World! The transformative and healing properties of the water coupled with its modern innovations make Blue Lagoon a timeless experience for any visitor!
