Volcano is a coming of age story of a 67 year old man. When Hannes retires from his job as a janitor begins the void that is the rest of his life. He is estranged from his family, hardly has any friends and the relationship with his wife has faded. Through drastic events, Hannes realises that he has to adjust his life in order to help someone he loves. Volcano is a love story about dealing with the choices of the past and the difficulties of the present in order to embrace the future.
Volcano premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it competed in Director‘s Fortnight and Camera D‘Or categories. The film has been selected for screening at other prestigious International Film Festivals like Karlovy Vary and Toronto. Runar Runarsson writes and directs the film that is produced by Skuli Malmquist and Thorir Snaer Sigurjonsson at Zik-Zak Filmworks in Reykjavik.
Iceland’s first submission to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was Land og synir (Land and Sons) in 1981. Two Icelandic films have been nominated for the Oscars® Awards. In 1992 Fridrik Thor Fridriksson’s Children of Nature was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and in 2006, Runar Runarsson was nominated for his short film The Last Far.
