In olden times, the Vikings divided the year into summer and winter halves, each marking the beginning of the new season. Not only is the summer solstice the longest day of the year, but it also leads to the annual Viking Solstice Festival.
In the Viking Village of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland from June 14th – 17th, 2012 Icelanders and tourists alike are invited to experience the ancient culture of the Vikings. Visitors can see Viking-style costumes, musical instruments, jewelry, crafts, and even sword fighting by professional Vikings!
The Viking Market in Hafnarfjordur is the oldest, largest and most important event of its kind in Iceland. Last year there were over two hundred Viking in attendance from all over the world to celebrate their heritage and teach their craft, celebrating the memories of their ancestors.
