Vacation Spots Inspired by Game of Thrones

With the Season 5 premiere airing on 4/12, now is the perfect time plan a trip to Iceland!

When filming for Game of Thrones, the cast was lucky enough to travel a number of picturesque locations around the world. As the show gains popularity, these beautiful filming locations attract more tourists. Mashable published an article detailing the best countries to visit if you want to reenact the television show. Leave your dragons and battle swords at home while you travel to one of the seven kingdoms!

Iceland: Vatnajökull in Iceland was used as the filming location for the famed North of the Wall scenes. This glacier is actually one of the largest in Europe and covers nearly 8% of the country. Also a national park, this location already attracts many tourists each year. Hverfjall Volcano in the Lake Myvatin region of Northern Iceland was also a location used for the icy scenes. More specifically, you may recognize it as the place through which the White Walkers trudged beyond the wall.

Malta: Visit the Azure Window in Gozo, which is the location of the Dothraki wedding in the first episode of season one. Next, take a trip to the walled city of Mdina. This tiny historic city was used as King’s Landing in season one.

Croatia: Another great walled city is Dubrovnik in Croatia. The walls surrounding the city were used to portray King’s Landing and the Red Keep. With plenty of shops, restaurants and hotels, this town is already a popular tourist location.

United Kingdom: There are, of course, many great spots to visit in the UK. Ballintoy, which is in Moyle, was used as the port town of Lordsport in Game of Thrones. The location features beautiful limestone cliffs and sprawling dunes. Also in the UK is Castle Ward. This 18th-century home is used for Winterfell, and is located in Stangford, Northern Ireland. Not to be forgotten Sandy Brae in the Mourne Mountains was used as an exterior filming location in season one of Game of Thrones.

Morocco: Essaouira is a beautiful location used during filming. However, it is definitely a location for more seasoned travelers as locals are known for tricking and swindling tourists.
