Travel Deal: Tour The Inside of a Volcano

Thrihnukagigur volcano is the only place on earth where it's safe to explore a magma chamber from the inside.

Ever wondered what a volcano looks like on the inside? This unique volcano tour literally takes you inside a dormant volcano, through the top crater and to the bottom of its magma chamber.

Thrihnukagigur volcano is the only place on earth where it’s safe to explore a magma chamber from the inside. The volcano has not erupted for 4,000 years and shows no signs of coming to life again anytime soon. The 5-6 hour tour add-on from Icelandair begins with a car ride (included with this package) from Reykjavik to the volcano. You’ll then walk over a genuine Icelandic lava field – often compared to the surface of the moon – to approach the volcano. The walk usually takes about 45–50 minutes to complete. It’s rated as moderate in difficulty – it’s not uphill but the surface is hilly and uneven.

When you reach the volcano, your group will use an open elevator system to descend 400 feet into the ground. The view is amazing and intriguing. Tour includes pick up/drop off from hotel, all required safety gear (helmets, harnesses, etc, light refreshments).

While waiting for everyone in the group to complete the volcano visit, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Icelandic meat soup, hot coffee, tea or chocolate and perhaps some sweets!
