Iceland is known for having some of the most creative artists in the world; this creativity is reflected in the number of annual art festivals in the country (there are a lot!). While all of Iceland’s art exhibitions are great sights to see, we’ve highlighted five art exhibitions you won’t want to miss this summer.
Mirroring
Where: Hornafjörður, Southeastern Iceland
When: May 18th – September 15th
What: Mirroring is a dialogue between one past artist, Savar Guðnason (b.1909 – 1988), and one current artist, Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir (b. 1981). Viewers are able to compare and contrast the artists’ work, each representing different times in which they lived. The exhibition shows that abstract art is just as alive today as it was over seven decades ago.
Sovereignty Revisited
Where: Akureyri Art Museum in North Iceland
When: April 28th – August 19th
What: This exhibition features work by 10 different artists, all created to celebrate Iceland’s 100th year of sovereignty. The goal of the exhibition is to shed light on Iceland’s sovereignty in modern times and offer viewers an opportunity to think about ideas, implementation and different perspectives in regards to Iceland’s sovereignty.
Roni Horn: Library of Water
Where: Stykkishólmur, West Iceland
When: Ongoing
What: Library of Water is a long-term exhibit in a former library created by Roni Horn. The building is located on a promontory overlooking the ocean in Stykkishólmur, a coastal town in Iceland. The town is home to three art collections: water, words and weather reports. All three reflect Horn’s involvement with the geography, geology, climate and culture of Iceland.
STAÐIR / PLACES
Where: Westfjords
When: July 7th – August 31
What: STAÐIR / PLACES is a bi-annual art exhibition that began with the goal of developing a platform for artists to create new work with a close tie to nature or historic and significant places. The exhibition allows artists to work in a creative environment by offering the time, space and freedom they need to explore new ways of working, all while surrounded by nature.
HVER / GERÐI
Where: Hveragerði Art Museum / Listasafn Árnesinga in West Iceland
When: May 19th – August 6th
What: This exhibition combines elements of interactivity and sensory technology, which allows the viewer to experience many possibilities in combining action with the effect of color, movements and sounds. To accompany these interactive pieces, there are paintings that allow the viewer to experience the juxtaposition between newer, technical art and more traditional art.
