This summer, music lovers in Iceland will have a tough time deciding between the many festivals taking place – some may even choose to attend them all. No matter the genre of music you prefer, there is bound to be a festival that suites your taste. From hard rock and heavy metal to classical music, here is a list of the festivals taking place in July and August:
Folk Music Festival: July 3-7
Taking place in Siglufjordur, the Folk Music Festival boasts performances of Icelandic and foreign folk music, with some outdoor activities and a bit of Medieval theatre mixed in.
Eistnaflug Music Festival: July 10-13
This 18+ festival takes place on the Eastern coast of Iceland in Neskaupstaður and features hard rock and heavy metal artists from around the world.
Reykholt Music Festival: July 26-28
Held in historic Reykholt and celebrating its 16th anniversary this year, the Reykholt Music Festival consists of classical artists from within Iceland as well as foreign artists from countries such as Norway, Lithuania, England, and Sweden.
Bræðslan Music Festival: July 27-28
Situated in arguably one of the most breathtaking rural towns in Iceland, Borgarfjörður, this festival has artsy folk, country, and indie rock artists in its lineup and is said to be a one-of-a-kind experience.
Innipúkinn Festival: August 2-4
Innipúkinn is a small annual music festival, held in downtown Reykjavík over Iceland’s bank holiday weekend. Past performers have included Cat Power, Blonde Redhead, Mugison, Raveonnettes, Hjálmar, Trabant, Seabear, Jonathan Ritchman, Mínus, Dikta, FM Belfast and many others. Along with the music program, this event also features a music market, pop quiz, BBQs and more.
The Icelandic Chamber Music Festival: August 7-17
Originally initiated by young Icelandic musicians, this festival offers both music courses and an exciting concert series. The festival is located in Kópavogur, where Salurinn concert hall serves as perfect grounds for over a hundred musicians and music students from all over the world.
