“BORDERS”, a major exhibition, by the internationally acclaimed Icelandic sculptor Steinunn Þórarinsdóttir (Thorarinsdottir) will open Thursday March 24, at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza on the corner of 47th Street and 2nd Avenue in New York City. It will be on display through September 2011. The statutes of humans will be spread between 1st and 2nd Avenues where thousands walk past every day.
Also Ms. Þórarinsdóttir’s installation of “Horizons” will inaugurate GMOA’s Jane and Harry Wilson Sculpture Garden, in Athens, Georgia, which is dedicated to female sculptors. Þórarinsdóttir has exhibited widely in Europe, Japan and Australia over the last 30 years, as well as in the United States, where “Horizons” has been traveling for the past three years. Previously installed in such contexts as fields, forests, galleries and gardens, 12 androgynous, life-sized, cast-iron figures are connected as a group by a polished glass band inserted across each figure’s chest. “[The figures] sometimes seem to communicate with each other and at other times are striking in their isolation, but in each case, they make the viewer a part of their conversation,” said Lynn Boland, GMOA’s Pierre Daura Curator of European Art.
