Although the principal photography production for Star Trek’s sequel has already wrapped, TrekMovie.com has announced that Star Trek will be in Iceland for the movie’s second unit shooting.
This will be Star Trek’s first time filming outside of the United States, the closest being a trip to Alaska for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Headed by Roger Guyett, the visual effects supervisor of the movie, the film crew will be in Iceland this summer filming solely for visual effects shots. Whether or not director J.J. Abrams and main characters, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana will be in Iceland along with Guyett and the film crew is uncertain.
Recently, Iceland has become a popular destination for filming, ranging from international action movies to all the way to local television shows. Other productions such as Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Horizon, Noah and HBO’s Game of Thrones have all been shot in Iceland over the past year. It’s not surprising that Star Trek has decided to shoot in the midst of the “land of fire and ice,” which is often quoted as resembling outer space.
The movie is set to be released May 17th, 2013, just under a year away.
