Sigur Rós Bring Icelandic Talent to Game of Thrones

The Icelandic band made a guest appearance in the “Purple Wedding” episode.

Popular Icelandic band Sigur Rós made a special appearance on HBO’s Game of Thrones Sunday night, performing a cover of “The Rains of Castamere” for a special royal wedding.

The highly respected band, which consists of drummer Orri Páll Dýrason, bass player Georg Hólm, and singer Jónsi Birgisson, traveled to Dubrovnik, Croatia, to film the scene.

The Wall Street Journal reported that producers approached Sigur Rós about recording the song and appearing in the show after hearing the band members were fans. Bass player Georg Hólm said in a statement, “It felt like a natural thing to make our version of ‘Rains of Castamere.’ We probably managed to create the gloomiest version so far 🙂 It is maybe not the happiest wedding song… but we think that it fit the scene very well.”

The haunting Sigur Rós cover is not Game of Thrones’ first connection to Iceland. The show has filmed scenes in Iceland for seasons two, three and four, and Icelandic weightlifter Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is joining the cast this season as Gregor Clegane, also known as “The Mountain.”
