Iceland’s most famous sites were recently digitized into immersive, panoramic views in Google’s latest Street View update. The Google Street Team canvassed the island to capture its many beautiful and historic sites. Users can now view Iceland’s waterfalls, volcanic craters, and geysers right from their desktops.
Locations added to Google’s street-level maps include Gullfoss and Dettifoss, two raging waterfalls that regularly attract tourists and nature-lovers from around the world. Many of Iceland’s other scenic water locations have also been added, including Kerið, a volcanic crater lake with striking aquamarine waters, located in south Iceland.
Street View users can also explore Þingvellir, or “Parliament Plains,” the ancient meeting spot of the world’s first official parliament, founded in 930 A.D. Parliament Plain’s historical significance has earned it the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning that it has been selected by the United Nations as a place of key importance in international history.
The Srokkur geyser, located in the Haukadalur Geothermal Area, was also spotlighted in the latest map update. Known locally as “Geysir,” this attraction draws crowds for a water show that captivates visitors of all ages. Like clockwork, the geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes with ferocious force, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
