The 14th Annual Iceland Airwaves Music Festival wrapped up November 3, ending five days of energetic musical performances by artists from around the world. Swarms of people gathered throughout the city of Reykjavik to take part in one of the world’s premier annual showcases for new music. The festival is known for its eclectic artists and party spirit, and this year was no exception.
Day one of Iceland Airwaves kicked off with a performance by Iceland’s own Snorri Helgason, a Taste of Iceland Reykjavik Calling alum, and continued with other unique performers such as the melodic Jónas Sen and the commanding AMFJ. Festival-goers hopped around between seven different venues to see their favorite, or new favorite, band.
The festival continued with high energy on day two, and expanded to eleven different venues throughout Reykjavik. Jagwar Ma, an Aussie band that has received acclaim for their debut album, performed Thursday night. Other performances included Toronto’s hardcore punk band Metz, and Iceland’s punk band Muck.
Sin Fang (another Reykjavik Calling alum) and Goat were among the performers on day three that had attendees dancing and jumping with energy and excitement. Reykjavik was buzzing with locals and internationals who were eating, drinking and dancing all through the day and into the night.
The party was still alive on the fourth day of Iceland Airwaves, featuring a range of performances from rap to electronic. New York rapper Mykki Blanco brought intensity to the stage, while Sun Glitters delivered lush melodies with his electronic music.
The last day of the festival offered fewer performances, but just as much diversity and talent. Moses Hightower, an Icelandic band that received the Songwriters of the Year award at the Icelandic Music Awards, finished the festival strong, along with artists The Vintage Caravan, Hellvar, and Retrobot.
This year’s Iceland Airwaves featured over 200 artists, hailing from locations ranging from Iceland to New York, to Copenhagen and beyond. A handful of the festival’s artists have performed at A Taste of Iceland’s Reykjavik Calling concerts in Seattle, Denver, and New York, including Sin Fang, Snorri Helgason, Lay Low, Asgeir, Appart Organ Quartet, Borko, FM Belfast, Hermigervill, Kithkin (US), Mum, and Sykur.
